Managing costs and upgraded utilities

Sector: Automotive

Technology: Combined Heat and Power (3.5MW), Infrastructure upgrades.

The Challenge: The customer’s expanding factory meant a requirement for upgraded electricity supply and utilities whilst achieving environmental compliance and targeting net zero.

The Solution: New primary 33kV connection, new 30MW gas connection, 3.5MW CHP (ready to run on 100% hydrogen from 2027-28). CHP heat used to provide 90oC hot water to 19 air handlers via 4km of pipework, for space heating and process heating. The project was funded under our zero capex Energy Savings Agreement. The result was cost savings of > £500k pa. The project will soon expand to include a microgrid, consisting of solar and battery storage, and inter-seasonal thermal storage is also planned.
