Integrating local green hydrogen to reduce gas consumption

Sector: Chemical

Technology: Onsite hydrogen generation

The Challenge: Over 200 GWh gas consumption annually used for steam raising at 40 barg for process and driving steam turbine. The site has set an aim to decarbonise.

The Solution: Phase 1: implementation of system that produces 3MW hydrogen gas per hour and 3.5MW of 62 barg steam from a reactor vessel. In phase 1, hydrogen is being blended with natural gas to reduce natural gas consumption, and steam is being mixed with the boiler outflow steam at 40 barg, again reducing steam raising using natural gas. Further phases of deployment are planned once the core boilers can be converted to hydrogen.
